Mend-It-Yourself Workshop

  • Watervliet Public Library 1501 Broadway Unit 1 Watervliet, NY 12189 (map)

Did you know that a garbage truck full of clothes is dumped or burned every second? Most clothing that’s produced nowadays comes from the fossil-fuel-derived polyester. As textiles are discarded or incinerated and makes its way into the environment, pollution of our air, land and water increases. Therefore, our exposure to BPA, PFAS, and other harmful substances also increases. Simply by wearing garments TWO times longer can cut related emissions by 44%. This is where mending comes in. Mending is essential and is for everyone. Come step out of the consumption cycle with us. Where one slow stitch at a time can make progress towards a larger movement for change. Join us for ‘MiY Time’ where you can learn the basics of mending and get hands-on experience practicing this necessary skill. We’ll start with simple stitches on scrap fabric and work towards mending 1 to 2 personal items. All necessary supplies will be provided, however attendees are welcomed to bring their own hand sewing essentials to practice with (optional).
