Sashiko Mending

  • Waterford Public Library 117 3rd Street Waterford, NY 12188 (map)

Sashiko is traditional Japanese embroidery or stitching used for decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth. In this workshop, learn the basics of Sashiko (pronounced sash-co) where functional mending skills meet creative design. Sashiko translates to ‘little stabs’ which refers to the hand needle going in and out of the fabric while you mend your item. Repairing items to last longer reduces our environmental impact, as well as increases our sense of purpose and connection with our surroundings.

Supplies to Bring: a pair of jeans or other woven cotton item needing repair and a specific fabric you’d like to use as a patch, otherwise scrap fabric will be made available
